Squalane

HOW DOES SQUALANE BENEFIT YOUR SKIN?

Squalane replenishes skin with lightweight nourishment while helping smooth dry, rough-feeling texture and reduce moisture loss. It leaves the complexion feeling softer, more supple and comfortably cushioned while supporting a stronger, more resilient moisture barrier.

Known for: Nourishing

Also supports: Strengthening

About

Squalane is a clear, lightweight emollient created from squalene, a lipid naturally present in human sebum and also found in plants. Squalene is hydrogenated to produce squalane, a more stable form especially well suited to modern cosmetic formulations.

Squalane

Science

The skin's outer layer is made of surface cells surrounded by protective lipids. When these lipids become depleted, microscopic spaces can develop between the cells, making skin feel rough and allowing moisture to escape more easily. Squalane spreads through these spaces as an emollient, helping replenish the lipid layer, smooth the surface and slow moisture loss for softer, more flexible and resilient-feeling skin.

History

Squalene was first reported by Japanese chemist Mitsumaru Tsujimoto after studying shark liver oil in 1906 and was more fully characterized in 1916. The later development of hydrogenated squalane provided cosmetics with a more stable, oxidation-resistant ingredient, while modern production has increasingly expanded to plant and biotechnology-based sources.

Origin

Cosmetic squalane may begin with squalene obtained from plant sources such as olives or produced through biotechnology-based processes. The squalene is purified and hydrogenated to create a clear, stable and highly refined emollient listed on cosmetic labels simply as Squalane.

Did You Know?

The one-letter difference between squalene and squalane represents an important chemical transformation. Hydrogenation removes squalene's reactive double bonds, making squalane considerably more stable and far less prone to oxidation.
